Vintage Sacramento │ 20 Vintage Postcards and Photos of What Sacramento Used to Look Like

Having lived in this blessed city for nearly 48 years, I wanted to remind myself what makes our city so great.

I've talked before about the Gold Rush of the 1850s, as I moved through my vintage Levi's blog post, and how the Gold Rush basically established Sacramento - putting us on the map.

And we're a great city for many reasons.

But, probably one of the greatest reasons is our natural and demographic beauty.

The state has magnificent weather. There's no doubt about that. Sacramento's average high this gorgeous month of April is 72 degrees. The low is 47. I don't need to explain this divinity to those who are suffering snow right now in other parts of the country.

As for our demographic beauty, we have the Gold Rush to thank for our diverse melting pot. People from every country worldwide came here to dig for gold: to quest for riches, if you will. From Africa, to France, to Switzerland, everyone wanted to make some money.

Most did not find gold. And for those who did, they squandered their treasure.

A select few were smart enough to spend wisely and also to strike it rich (that helps) and they ended up furthering the cities surrounding the gold rush areas of Sutter, Sonoma, San Francisco, and the like.

Sacramento was an integral part of it all.

If you want to read more about the Gold Rush, I highly recommend the book The Age of Gold, by H.W. Brands. It's very detailed and in-depth, but it's riveted with California history. I love the book and am plodding my way through it.

Take a journey back in time with me and enjoy these vintage Sacramento old postcards and photos.

If you haven't been to the state capital of Sacramento, come on over! There's a rich history that is undeniably "Western"; one solidly constructed out of making "dreams come true."
